1308457 Slag NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 29 May 1970 [6 June 1969] 28895/69 Heading C1K The average crystal size in air cooled blast furnace slag is increased by heating the slag to a temperature above that associated with maximum nucleation rate, annealing the slag at 850-1400‹ C. from between 3 hours and 3 days and then cooling the slag to ambient temperature. Alternatively the slag may be melted, quenched, reheated but without prolonged heating at the temperature of high nucleation, and thereafter annealing and cooling the slag. Additionally the slag may be heated, annealed and cooled a second time.
