Abstract

1308347 Driving fasteners into steel HILTI AG 12 Nov 1970 [8 Dec 1969] 53879/70 Heading B4C [Also in Divisions B3 F2 and H2] A method of driving a fastener into high tensile strength steel comprises the steps of first forming a blind hole in the steel and then driving into the hole by means of an explosivelyactuated fastener-driving tool a threaded fastener, the shank diameter of which is from 3/10 mm-5/10 mm., preferably 4/10 mm., greater than the diameter of the hole. The drawings illustrate the connection of an electric cable 8 to a railway rail 1, which connection employs the steps referred to. A clamp 2 having a socketed member 2b is secured in the rail, a centering piece 4 is positioned in the member and a drill 3 is inserted into the centering piece and the blind hole is bored. The centering piece 4 is then removed and a portion of the fastener driving tool 6 is inserted into the member so as to align the fastener with the blind hole. -Firing of the tool secures the fastener, which preferably has a shank length of from 10 mm.- 12 mm. and a shank diameter of from 5 mm.- 6 mm., in the rail. The connection is completed by passing washers 9 and an apertured end of the cable over the fastener head and by securing the washers and cable end by a nut 10.
