1307868 Laminates; moulding foamed articles CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES DE NORMANDIE 29 July 1970 [30 July 1969] 36790/70 Headings B5A and B5N [Also in Division B7] A foam lath of constant transverse crosssection for use in the construction of a ship's hull or deck plating comprises sheets of covering material with overhanging side portions which have been closely adhered on longitudinal faces of the lath at the actual time of formation of the foam. In the hull or deck plating the foam laths are glued side by side parallel to one another, an overhanging portion of each of the sheets of covering material extending from an individual lath to which it is adhered to cover also a portion of an adjacent lath. The foam may be a rigid polyurethane foam of closed porosity and the covering material may be fibre-glass sheet. In cross-section each lath may be bonded by two parallelsemi-circles of the same radius joined with one another by two parallel edges of the same shape. A foam lath having adhered thereto sheets of permeable covering material may be produced by applying the sheets to the appropriate surfaces of a mould having a constant cross-section of a shape corresponding to that of the foam lath to be made, progressively injecting the foam-forming mixture from one longitudinal end of the mould to its other end, the mould being closed progressively and in proportion to the injection until its total closure, leaving the foam to develop in the closed mould until sufficient impregnation of the desired parts of the sheets of permeablecovering material is effected and removing the lath from the mould, the parts of the sheets intended to form the overhanging side portions being maintained separate from the volume wherein the foam develops at the timeof moulding.
