Abstract

1307770 Automatic control of reeling FENN MFG CO 23 July 1970 [24 July 1969] 35673/70 Heading G3R In a system for automatically controlling tension in material being unwound from a reel driven by an electric motor, variation in the size of a loop of the material causes rotation of a sensing member, which when above a predetermined speed, varies speed to correct the changes in tension. In Fig. 2, a coil of tubular stock to be reduced in diameter and/or wall thickness, supported on a turn-table 14, is unwound by a reel 23 driven by a D.C. shunt motor supplied from anA.C. motorgenerator (not shown) and passed through a straightener 20, 22 to a drawing die 18. The stock is drawn through the die by a block 24 on which a few turns are held by members 32 pressing against the block, the surplus being shed downwards to coil up on a turn-table 26. Block 24 is driven by another electric motor (not shown) the speed of which is maintained constant at threading or running speed by tachometer generator feedback. An adjustable resistor in the field circuit of the motor driving reel 23 is set so that feed speed is insufficient and the loop of stock shortens until it engages and rotates a rotor 66. At a predetermined speed rotor 66 closes a switch to shortcircuit another adjustable resistor in the field circuit of the motor driving reel 23 so that the feed speed is then too great and this action occurs intermittently to maintain a correct average feed speed. Eddy-current braking slows rotor 66 when it is not engaging the stock. Jaws 30 are provided for gripping the end of the stock during the winding of the first few turns after starting.
