Abstract

1307692 Cartridges FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF AND COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON-HOTCHMSS BRANDT 23 Feb 1970 [4 March 1969] 8621/70 Heading F3A A cartridge comprises a tube A having a closed end 3 and housing a plurality of missiles B<SP>1</SP> ... B<SP>n</SP> one behind the other. The tube A has mounted thereon for each missle a firing means by which the missiles are fired in succession and one at a time. Each firing means comprises a device C<SP>1</SP> in which is housed a detonator 26, a relay 17 and a powder charge 18, the detonator 26 being, before firing, separated from the relay 17 by a head 23 of a missile locking means 19 and the powder charge 18 being in communi. cation with a chamber 8 formed between two adjacent missiles. The locking means 19 is held in its missile retaining position by a split ring 22. The firing means also includes a pair of switches housed in a cover 30, the first switch being held in a position in which a lead D<SP>1</SP> is electrically connected to the detonator 26 by the insulated stem 32a of a valve member 32 and the second switch being held in a position such that the lead D<SP>1</SP> is disconnected from a following lead (D<SP>2</SP>) which connects with the detonator of the following device (C 2 ) by the stem 37<SP>a</SP> of a piston 37. On firing the detonator 26, the head 23 is urged upwardly such that the retaining action of the split ring 22 is overcome. Gases from the detonator 26 then impinge on the relay 17 to ignite the charge 18. At the same time a ball 34 held in a passage between the head 23 and the valve member 32 and retaining the valve member 32 seated is released but residual gases from the detonator maintain the valve member 32 seated. When the missile has substantially passed the device C<SP>1</SP> pressurized gases pass through a aperture 39 to act against the piston 37 shearing a piston holding pin 38 and allowing the contacts of the second switch to make. When the missile leaves the tube A the gas pressure therein drops as therefore does the pressure acting on valve member 32. Thus the valve member 32 unseats to withdraw its stem 32a from the cover 30 to allow the contacts of the first switch to make. If the potential is maintained permanently in the lead D 1 the second device (C<SP>2</SP>) will then be actuated.
