Abstract

1307525 Switching systems SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 March 1970 [11 April 1969] 18826/69 Heading H2H [Also in Division H1 A thermal delay device comprises a heat sink 11, an electric heating coil 15 and a bimetal switch 10, the coil, when energized, heating the heat sink to a temperature substantially in excess of the operating temperature of the bimetal switch whereby the switch remains closed for some time after the heating coil is deenergized. The heat sink has low thermal capacity but considerable lagging 19 to reduce the rate of loss of heat. While the coil is energized a thermostat 16 in series with the coil 15 maintains the temperature of the heat sink at about 150‹ C. whereas the bimetal switch 10 closes at 40‹ C. The delay switch is associated with a light switch 18, e.g. in a bathroom. A fan motor 12 is energized a short while after the switch 18 is closed and remains so for some time after it is opened. The light may be in series or parallel with coil 15. A second pole of switch 18 may be connected to energize the fan motor immediately. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the thermostat 16 is omitted; the time for which switch 10 remains closed then depends on the heat supplied to the heat sink 11, i.e. the time for which the external switch (23) is closed. This embodiment is applied to control of a car windscreen demister. The space inside heat sink 11 may be filled with air or oil.
