1307518 Collapsible mandrels ROCKINGHAM DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd B J WESTON K E DRAKE and C T TURNER 5 March 1970 [5 March 1969] 11756/69 Heading B5A A mandrel for use in casting comprises a body member and a plurality of alternately disposed working elements 2 and slave elements 3 reciprocatable between an expanded position (Fig. 2, not shown) in which all the elements from part of the mandrel surface proud of the body surface and a withdrawn position in which only the slave element surfaces and the body surface form the mandrel surface (see Fig. 7), movement of the working elements resulting in movement of the slave elements to corresponding positions through interacting surfaces on adjacent elements. A shaft 4 having cam surfaces 5 and 6 is movable in the body formed by parts 7, 8 and 9 linked by two sets of four bolts 22 and 8<SP>1</SP>. Cam surface 6 interacts with cam surfaces 33 on the working elements to move the latter and hence the slave elements 3 inwards, and surfaces 5 and 32 interact to move the elements 2 and 3 outwards as the shaft is moved. The elements are located in slots in the end of part 7. Shaft 4 carries a double pipe 19 to carry cooling liquid to channels 15 and 12 and form channel 16. The elements are arranged so that during radial movement there is no radial thrust on the surfaces (38 and 39) of adjacent elements which abut in the expanded position.
