Abstract

1307318 Dry cleaning DOW CHEMICAL CORP 22 April 1970 [24 April 1969] 19368/70 Heading D1P A method for dry cleaning fabrics comprises: (a) contacting the fabric with a dry cleaning solvent containing 0.005-25 volume% of H 2 O and 0.01-5 volume% of a detergent for 1-20 minutes, then removing the liquid; and then in any order (b) contacting the fabric with a dry cleaning solvent containing 0.01-15 volume% of a detergent for 1-20 minutes, then removing the liquid; and (c) contacting the fabric with a dry cleaning solvent containing 0.01-5 volume% of a detergent for 1-20 minutes, then removing the liquid. If so desired the extracted, optionally, contaminant free solvent and/or liquids can be stored for neutralisation in the same step in a subsequent process. The detergent is anionic, non-ionic or a mixture thereof in steps (a) and (b); and the detergent is anionic in step (c). Suitable dry cleaning solvents include: chlorinated hydrocarbons e.g. carbon tetrachloride, methyl chloroform, ethylene dichloride, trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene, chlorofluorocarbons e.g. trichlorofluoromethane, tetrachlorodifluoroethane, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, trichlorotrifluoroethane or mixtures thereof; and hydrocarbon solvents e.g. Stoddard solvent and naphtha. Suitable anionic detergents include soluble salts of alkyl sulfonates, sulfated or sulfonated amines and amides, phosphate esters, alcohol sulfates, ethoxylated alcohol sulfates, sulfonates of alkyl naphthalenes, sulfated ethoxylated alkyl phenols, sulfated fatty esters, sulfated and sulfonated oils and fatty acids, dodecyl and tridecyl benzene sulfonates, petroleum sulfonates and taurates. Preferred anionic detergents are phosphate esters e.g. where n=2-4, m=0-12, p=1-2; R represents a hydrogen, alkyl, phenyl, alkyl phenyl or aryl phenol, said alkyl moieties having 1-20 C atoms; and when R is hydrogen m#1; and when m is 0, R is carbon chain of #4 C atoms; and M being hydrogen or a (water soluble) salt-forming cation such as sodium, magnesium, potassium, ammonium or alkyl ammonium. Suitable non ionic surfactants include the alkyl phenoxy poly alkeneoxy alkanols, alkanol amides; ethoxylated alcohols, amides, amines and fatty acids; glycerol ethers; sorbitan derivative and tertiary amine oxides.
