Abstract

1307222 Helically-corrugated pipes J ENGL Ltd 26 March 1970 [20 March 1969] 14783/69 Heading F2P A pipe comprises a first single layer plastics sheath 17 surrounding a helical coil 10 and contracted between adjacent spaced turns thereof, and a second single layer plastics sheath 16 surrounding and engaging sheath 17. The two sheaths are not bonded or otherwise positively attached together. One or more threads 30 of polypropylene, having circular or flattened sections, may be helically wound round either one or both sheaths between adjacent turns of coil 10. The sheaths may be spaced apart between adjacent turns of coil 10 to form a helical air passage. The sheaths may be of P.V.C. and the coil 10 of steel or P.V.C.-coated steel. The outer sheath may be harder than the inner one. To make the pipe, the coil 10 is stretched on a mandrel, Fig. 6 (not shown), and then inserted through the inner sheath whilst the latter is held, radially expanded in a vacuum chamber, Fig. 7 (not shown). Releasing the vacuum allows the sheath to engage the coil. After winding on the threads 30 the outer sheath is applied by a similar procedure.
