Abstract

1306665 Electrostatic charging process RCA CORPORATION 20 Aug 1971 [31 Aug 1970] 39182/71 Heading G2H [Also in Division H1] A uniform electrostatic charge is produced on an electro-photographic element comprising a layer of photo-conductive pyroelectric material by heating or cooling the layer. In a preferred embodiment a plate 32 of Al, Cu or stainless steel has joined thereto by solder or conductive paste 36, a plurality 28 of monocrystalline ZnO wafers doped with Cu or Li oriented with the c-axis normal to the plate 32. Wafers of hexagonal, rectangular or square shape may be used. The element may be warmed by heater 42 or cooled by jets 47 to produce the temperature change. Once charged the element may be imagewise exposed, developed &c. in a conventional manner. Peltier elements may be used to effect cooling. The temperature change is preferably between 5 and 30‹C. and the voltage developed is proportional to the wafer thickness.
