Abstract

1306525 Purification of catholytes ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 29 April 1970 [1 May 1969] 20706/70 Heading C2C A method for purifying a catholyte which comprises an aqueous phase and an oil phase and is used in the electrolytic hydrodimerization of acrylonitrile to give adiponitrile, is effected by first removing acrylonitrile contained in the catholyte by distillation, adjusting the pH of the aqueous phase in the remaining emulsified liquor to 3À0 or below in order to force a major portion of the carboxylates contained in the aqueous phase into the oil phase and removing the carboxylate-containing oil phase. The pH adjustment is suitably carried out by adding sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric, alkylsulphuric or phosphoric acid. After removal of the carboxylates the oil phase may be recycled to the catholyte.
