Abstract

1306335 Optical filters STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 1 July 1971 30897/71 Heading G2J [Also in Division H1] A display device (e.g. c.r.t.) has a light scattering light, emissive display medium covered by a passband interference filter having an effective refractive index as defined, not greater than 1À65 (e.g. 1À46), such that when light is reflected back into the display medium a proportion will be scattered to re-emerge at angles for which the filter is transmitting. The display device may be a c.r.t. with a granular (p 1 ) phosphor (4) and the filter (3) may be within the tube envelope. The construction improves contrast by ensuring at least part of the re-emitted light is at an angle closer to the normal and is not selectively reflected. The filter may be of ZnS and cryolite alternating layers and of structure S L H LLLLLL H L H LLLLLL H L H LLLLLL H where L and H are low and high Á“ wave layers and S is the substrate. The filter passband may be matched at an angle other than the normal (e.g. 30 degrees Œ15 degrees).
