Abstract
1306210 Enema bag NICHOLAS GmbH 14 Oct 1971 [9 Jan 1971] 24398/71 Heading A5R An enema bag comprises a receptacle 1 having a cavity for containing a fluid, which cavity converges towards its normally lower end; an outlet spout 5 depending from the normally lower end of the receptacle for discharging the fluid from the cavity; a flexible tube 11 extending from said spout for conveying said fluid to the anus of an animal; valving means 13 for controlling the discharge of fluid from the flexible tube; a filling part 7 for charging fluid into the cavity and a closure member 8 for closing said port in a fluid-tight manner, at least part of the receptacle being resiliently flexible to allow the volume of the cavity to be substantially reduced by squeezing said part, the cavity subsequently returning to approximately its original volume on releasing said part. The enema bag of Figs. 1 and 2 may be seamlessly moulded from polyethylene and includes a substantially cuboid body part formed by rectangular walls 2 and convex side and top walls 3, 4, which cuboid body part converges at its lower end into a frustopyramidal body part formed by triangular walls 2'. Depending from the lower end of the frusto-pyramid is a flexible spout carrying circumferentially extending ribs 6 which facilitate the fluid tight connection of the flexible tube 11. A ball 10 of slightly larger diameter than the bore of the spout 5 may be engaged in the neck of the spout. The flexible tube 11 is fitted with a flow control clip 13, and terminates in a rectal tip 12. The bag may be filled with, say, a liquid X-ray contrast medium via the port 7, which is then sealed with cap 8, the tip 12 is inserted through the anus of a patient, and, after displacing the ball 10 into the bag by manipulation of the spout, and release of the clamp 13 the liquid may be forced into the gut by squeezing the bag. After discharge of the liquid the gut may be evacuated by releasing the sides of the bag, or, the tube 11 may be removed from the spout 5 and connected to other apparatus.
