Abstract

1306185 Twin screw extruder BOHLER & CO AG GEBR 19 April 1971 [6 Feb 1970 (3)] 21300/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division B1] In an extruder provided with contra'-rotating intermeshing twin screws 1, 1<SP>1</SP> drivingly interconnected by gears, the helical screw lands 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are each provided along its crest with a welded facing 3, or 3<SP>1</SP>, which consists of a harder metal, e.g. tungsten carbide, and extends along the leading edge of the crest across a part a only of the total width b thereof. The protruding crest facing, 3 or 3<SP>1</SP> of one screw sealingly extends into a helical groove 4 or 4<SP>1</SP>, in the other screw. The extruder housing 8 is provided with an inlet opening, the lateral boundaries 10, 10<SP>1</SP> whereof are parallel to the screw lands 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, and sealing between the upstream boundaries 10, 10<SP>1</SP> and screw supporting bearings 7, 7<SP>1</SP> is effected by at least one full turn of each land 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, with relief ducts 11 being provided through the housing to detect leakage of the seal.
