Abstract
1305936 Grinding; gauging LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc 17 Feb 1970 [17 Feb 1969] 7501/70 Headings B3B and B3D A dimension gauge and a work locator gauge are arranged on a single mounting and controlled so that the dimension gauge becomes operative only after the locator gauge has determined the workpiece position. The workpiece is held between centres and, after advance of the mounting, is moved axially until checked by a signal from the locator gauge, the dimension gauge being held inoperative. The mounting then withdraws and grinding commences. Near the end of the grinding operation the mounting advances again with the dimension gauge released to engage the workpiece during final grinding. A chordal gauge 31 and associated jet 34, Fig. 2, are mounted by leaf springs 63, 64, 67, 68 on an assembly 52, 53, 69 all rigidly joined at 70 to a pillar 71. The pillar 71 is reciprocated horizontally by piston and cylinder means 77, 78. A rod 72 acts as guide. The locator gauge is carried on an arm 35 mounted on a shaft 40 for pivotal movement derived from a pin and slot connection 55, 54 with the assembly 52, 53, 69. Projections 50, 51 on a hub 41 on the shaft 40 alternatively block jets 47, 48 to signal the extreme positions of the arm. At the end 36 of the arm is a jet towards which the work is moved by axial travel of head and tail stocks 16, 15 until obstruction by a flange 24, Fig. 7, of the work produces a signal to halt the movement. When the arm 35 is advanced to working position by movement to the right, Fig. 2, of the assembly, the dimension gauge is held back by piston and cylinder means 81, 83, 84, the cylinder 81 being fixed. The signal derived from correct location of the workpiece, causes withdrawal of the gauges during initial grinding. During final grinding both gauges advance, a further signal releasing the dimension gauge for advance by its spring mountings 67, 68. The arm 35 has portions thinned to provide resilience at the end 36, Fig. 4 (not shown), to prevent damage on accidental contact with the workpiece and to permit adjustment in the axial direction of the end relative to the main portion of the arm.
