Abstract

1305586 Magnetic contact devices BRIGGS & STRATTON CORP 24 Feb 1970 8879/70 Heading H1N A sealed magnetic reed contact unit with main co-operating contact members 16 has an auxiliary contact member 12 biased to engage the end of the contact member 16 on which it is mounted so that its contact face is in the contact gap 16 when the contact unit is in its de-energized condition. The contact surfaces of the members 16 may be coated with tungsten and the contact member 12 may be made of molybdenum wire with ends 21 welded to the first mentioned main contact member 16. The main contact members normally engage fixed steps 11, 11<SP>1</SP> as disclosed in Specification 1,153,138 and so as to ensure that the preloading against the stops is not lost during heat sealing of the components in the envelope 7 the main contact members 16 may be bimetallic (Fig. 5) with one layer of a material which loses its preload stress at a higher temperature than the other layer, the latter being nearest the stop 11. The layers are heated during manufacture to a temperature such as 1400‹ F. and as the subsequent cooling takes place the bimetal strip will be stressed against its stop 11.
