Abstract
1305493 Borax SOC CHIMICA LARDERELLO SpA 21 April 1971 [21 April 1970] 10501/71 Heading C1A Aqueous sodium borate solution, from which borax can be crystallized directly in the penta- and/or decahydrate form, is produced from a source of Na 2 O in the form of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and/or sodium bicarbonate and from a clear aqueous solution of ammonium borates resulting from the treatment of one or more boron-calcium minerals with ammonia and CO 2 . The solution of ammonium borates is introduced into a distilllation column in which it is decomposed by heat to produce a solution which is substantially free of ammonia. There is introduced into the upper part of the distillation column (i) the clear aqueous solution of ammonium borates and (ii) at least 50% of the quantity of Na 2 O which is stoichiometrically required to convert the ammonium borates into borax, the remaining portion of the Na 2 O which is stoichiometrically required being subsequently introduced, as sodium hydroxide, into the solution which is taken out at the bottom of the column whereby an aqueous solution of borax is obtained from which penta- and/or decahydrated borax can be crystallized directly. Preferably stage (ii) comprises 50 to 82% of the Na 2 O which is stoichiometrically required.
