Abstract

1305046 Producing diamond UKRAINSKY ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY KONSTRUKTORSKO - TEKHNOLOGICHESKY INSTITUT SINTETICHESKIKH SVERKHTVERDYKH MATERIALOV I INSTRUMENTA GOSPLANA UKRAINSKOI SSR 3 Dec 1970 [4 May 1970] 57531/70 Heading C1A Diamonds are prepared by subjecting a carboniferous material, i.e. carbon or a material which decomposes to give free carbon under the conditions used, and calcium oxide in direct contact therewith to a temperature of at least 1800‹ C. and a pressure corresponding to that temperature within the diamond stable region of the carbon-graphite-diamond phase equilibrium diagram. The temperature is preferably at least 2000‹ C. and the pressure at least 80k.bars. The preferred carboniferous material is graphite which may be spectrally pure graphite. The calcium oxide may be mixed into a homogenous mixture with the graphite, or the reaction mix may comprise discs of CaO and graphite which are packed in alternating array into the chamber.
