Abstract

1305015 Treatment of minerals ENGLISH CLAYS LOVERING POCHIN & CO Ltd 24 March 1970 [26 March 1969] 15925/69 Heading C1A The brightness of a silicate mineral having a layer-lattice crystal structure, especially one of the kaolin group, is improved by first contacting it in aqueous suspension simultaneously with (1) a substance capable of forming an intercalation complex with the mineral and (2) a reducing agent capable of converting ferric ions in the mineral to ferrous, then decomposing the intercalation complex under non-oxidizing conditions. Hydrazine or a derivative of the formula NHR 1 .NHR 2 or NH 2 .NH.CO.R 3 , where each of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 is H or C 1 -C 6 alkyl, may act as both intercalating and reducing agent or other intercalating agents, e.g. urea, formamide or acetamide, may be used with a separate reducing agent. The complex may be decomposed by washing with water containing an oxygen scavenger, then with water alone and drying. The process is particularly applicable to kaolinitic clays, e.g. china clays with a particle size below 2À5 microns, but can also be applied to minerals of the montmorillonite group.
