Abstract

1304990 Foundry moulds RHONE-POULENC SA 22 July 1971 [22 July 1970] 34492/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division C3] A flexible mould for casting metals is made of a vulcanized elastomer having a Shore hardness between 30 and 60, a tensile strength of 40-90 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and elongation at break of 200-600%, obtained from a composition comprising (i) a polydiorganosiloxane in which the organo groups are methyl, phenyl or vinyl radicals and there is on average one vinyl radical per 250- 1000 Si atoms, of viscosity 20,000-30,000,000 cp./25‹ C., (ii) an anti-structure agent, (iii) 20-50 wt. per cent of silica, relative to (i), and (iv) 0À1-10 wt. per cent of a heat resistance adjuvant. In the example a composition comprising (i) a trimethylsiloxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane containing 0À23 wt. per cent methylvinylsiloxane units, of viscosity 25 Î 10<SP>6</SP> cp./25‹ C., (ii) a polydimethylsiloxane diol, of viscosity 40 cp./25‹ C., containing 13 wt. per cent OH groups, (iii) a pyrogenic silica treated with [Me 2 SiO] 4 and (iv) Fe and Mn octoates, is mixed with 2 : 4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide paste (in silicone oil), and formed into disc-shaped sheets. The disc-shaped sheets are rubbed with talc to render them non-tacky and a pattern of 3 buckles is placed between a pair of sheets, a pouring orifice being provided at the centre of one disc. The sheets are vulcanized in a press at 70 bars pressure at 160‹ C. for 30 mins. then heated for 4 hours at 150‹ C. and 8 hours at 200‹ C. After cooling, runners are cut in the mould and zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy melting at 435‹ C. may be centrifugally cast therein.
