Abstract

1304677 Oligomers MERCK PATENT GmbH 15 June 1971 [20 June 1970] 28013/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] In a process for the preparation of an oligomer with identical end groups, at least one radical polymerizable monovinyl compound, except unsubstituted olefins with more than two carbon atoms, is reacted with a symmetrical, radical donating azo compound as initiator, said initiator having a half-life of at most 120 minutes at from 60 to 160‹ C., the concentration of the initiator fragments being so adjusted that, upon reaching the desired degree of polymerization of between 1 and 200, a complete chain termination takes place exclusively by initiator fragments. Preferred initiators have the general formula wherein R 1 is an alkyl radical having up to 6 carbon atoms, and the preferred oligomers have the general formula wherein R is a radical fragment derived from the initiator, R 1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R 2 is a hydrogen atom or a phenyl or substituted phenyl radical or a radical of the general formula -COOR 3 , -COR 4 , -CHO, -CN, -OR 5 or R 3 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical having up to 18 carbon atoms, which can be intercepted by heteroatoms, a cycloalkyl radical having 3 to 7 carbon atoms or a phenyl or substituted phenyl radical, R 4 is an amino group or a mono- or dialkyl-amino radical, the alkyl groups of which contain up to 18 carbon atoms, a CO-alkyl group, the alkyl groups of which contain up to 18 carbon atoms, or a CO-phenyl radical, the phenyl group of which can also be substituted, R 5 is an alkyl or aliphatic acyl radical having up to 18 carbon atoms and n is an integer from 1 to 200, with the proviso that R 1 is not an alkyl radical when R 2 is a hydrogen atom. In the examples a large variety of vinyl monomers are converted to oligomers using azodiisobutyronitrile, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-azobis - 4 - cyanopentanoic acid, 2,21 - azo - bis- (2-methyl - butyronitrile), and 2,2<SP>1</SP>- azo - bisisobutyric acid ethyl ester and diethyl ester.
