Abstract
1304671 Braking means on projectiles BOFORS AB 8 Jan 1971 [8 Jan 1970] 1097/71 Heading F3A A smoke, gas or illuminating flare or other assembly for separation from a spinning projectile comprises a body 5 provided with a plurality of flaps 3 which are erected under the action of centrifugal force and brake the spinning movement. The flaps comprise two parts 15 and 16 which are wrapped around respective shafts 14 and are integral with one another, or are joined together along edges 15a and 16a. The design of the flaps is such that the total centrifugal loadings on the two parts are equal or differ by less than the resistance to being pulled around the shafts. Additional resistance to pulling around the shafts is provided by spot welding, riveting, soldering and/or adhering the two parts together at points remote from the shafts. The two parts are of the same or different lengths. The body 5 is attached to a parachute 6 and is expelled from the remainder of the assembly by a charge 13. A parachute attached at 11 reduces the axial velocity of the assembly as it separates from the projectile.
