Abstract
1304500 Explosive compositions ICI AUSTRALIA Ltd 7 Jan 1972 [11 Jan 1971] 795/72 Heading C1D A slurry explosive composition contains an oxygen-releasing salt, water, a fuel, and a non- cross-linked polymeric material produced by microbial transformation of carbohydrate. The composition retains its sensitivity to detonation after storage, pumping, and contact with water. The polymeric material may be prepared by reacting a sugar or starch with a micro-organism of the genus Xanthomonas, e.g. Xanthomonas campestris; other suitable species of the genus are listed. Also referred to are dextran produced by Leuconostoc mesenteroides and glucosan produced by Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The product may contain polysaccharides comprising the units d-mannose, d-glucose, d-glucuronic acid as the potassium or sodium salt, and pyruvic acid. The oxygen-releasing salt may be ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, or other nitrates, chlorates, or perchlorates of ammonium, alkali metals, or alkaline earth metals. Fuels specified are TNT, RDX, HMX, tetryl, PETN, nitrocellulose, nitrostarch, urea, sugar, molasses, alcohols, diethylene glycol, glues, sulphur, aluminium, silicon, ferrosilicon, ferrophosphorus, magnesium, titanium, boron, charcoal, anthracite, gilsonite, asphalt, sawdust, flours, dextrins, or starches. Finely divided coated aluminium powder may be added as a sensitizer. Other optional additives are tartaric acid as a cross-linking retardant, ethyl hexanol as an anti-foaming agent, alkylene oxide condensates of phenols or amides as surfactants, and non-cross-linked guar gum as an additional thickener. The composition may contain air or gas stirred in, added encapsulated in or attached to particulate material, or generated in situ.
