Abstract

1304257 Mixing apparatus P R STEHNING 30 June 1970 31561/70 Heading B1C Mixing apparatus comprises a vessel 1, 2 having a frusto-conical base portion 6 provided with at least one annular baffle 27 having one or more apertures 28 therein, and a stirrer 14 having arms 20 each carrying blades 21 arranged to rotate between or on either side of the baffle(s), at least one arm also carrying a scraper 33 arranged to scrape material into one or more discharge aperture(s) 32 located in the bottom of a ring 30 encircling the base portion. The vessel may be jacketed for heat transfer purposes, and the outlet 5 of the vessel may be connected to a vacuum source for removal of vapours. Material to be treated may be continuously supplied by a pump 8. The drive shaft 13 of the stirrer may be provided with a screw 18 to assist the flow of the material into the vessel. A discharge screw 35 may be arranged below each discharge aperture 32. The level of material in the vessel may be regulated using a y-ray source 40 and Geiger counter 41 arranged to control the speed of motors 7, 12 driving the feed pump and stirrer. Splashing of material above the stirrer may be prevented by providing an anti-splash ring 42 and parts 33a on the scrapers for scraping material off the ring 42. One or more of the apparatuses may be used for the production of polymers by condensation reactions. According to a modification, the baffle(s) may be attached to the arms of the stirrer instead of the base portion of the vessel.
