Abstract

1303696 Optical apparatus COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 14 Sept 1970 [12 Sept 1969] 43821/70 Heading G2J Ultra-short pulses of monochromatic polarized light are measured by splitting the light-beam 1 into two beams 3, 4 which follow identical path lengths and interfere on the surface of a photocathode 7 located in a vacuum, the interference causing the emission of electrons from said photo-cathode 7 which are used to form an image of the interference zone from which the duration of the light pulses can be deduced . The image is formed by making the electrons from photocathode 7 incident upon an electron multiplier system 8, 9, comprising parallel fibres polarized by a D.C. generator, and then impinge upon a fluorescent screen or photographic plate 10. If the screen is used the resultant image is photographed. The light beam is preferably laser light from e.g. helium-neon gas laser or a solid neodymium-doped glass laser and the photocathode preferably has a surface of a thin layer of gold, caesium, silver or nickel. The two beams are incident on photo-cathode 7 at identical, and preferably grazing, angles of incidence. The pulse duration #t is derived from the formula #t = 1 sin #/C where 1 is the half-width of an interference fringe, # is the angle of incidence and C the speed of light in the medium adjacent the photo-cathode 7.
