Abstract

1303598 Bituminous material MEYNADIER & CIE AG 19 April 1971 [6 March 1970] 23079/71 Heading C3N [Also in Division B2] An insulation layer for sealing structures is produced by simultaneously and separately applying to the structure an emulsion selected from a bitumen emulsion, bitumen-polymer emulsion, a tar emulsion and a tar-polymer emulsion and a substance which breaks the emulsion comprising finely divided solid materials. These solids may be dry or wetted powder, or an aqueous powder slurry, and may be applied by spraying or dusting. Suitable solid materials are (1) materials which chemically bond the emulsion water, e.g. cement, hydraulic lime, gypsum, anhydrite, caustic lime and mixtures thereof; (2) materials which physically bond the emulsion water, e.g. bentonite, bleaching earth, kaolin and mixtures thereof; (3) materials with large surface area at which surface there are absorptively bound the emulsifiers and stabilizers of the emulsion, e.g. submicroscopic finely-divided silicic acid, natural and artificial pozzolanas, slate dust, activated charcoal, carbon black, and mixtures thereof. The method can be used for the insulation of ground and subterranean structures, especially tunnels, ceilings, galleries, underground structures, troughs and foundations as well as for the insulation of foundation and support walls and flat roofs and for gas-insulating purposes.
