Abstract

1303264 Shirring UNION CARBIDE CORP 6 Feb 1970 [7 Feb 1969] 5715/70 Heading A2B A continuous length of flexible tubing is shirred in a process which comprises continuously admitting an inflating gas at above atmospheric pressure into the tubing, and advancing the inflated tubing to and through a shirring zone in which the effective internal pressure on the wall of the tubing is increased, for example by maintaining the atmosphere therein below atmospheric pressure. Preferably the tubing is exposed to an atmosphere of gradually decreasing pressure as it is advanced to the shirring zone. A suitable apparatus comprises a hollow mandrel extending through a plurality of shirring members disposed about the mandrel, tubing feed members adjacent the mandrel for advancing the tubing onto the mandrel, a source of inflating gas for inflating the tubing through the mandrel, and means for increasing the effective internal pressure on the wall of inflated tubing as it is being shirred, for example a vacuum chamber with a vacuum source attached thereto enclosing the shirring members and that portion of the mandrel extending therethrough, said chamber having an inlet and an outlet opening engaging the mandrel, and arranged to engage tubing passing along the mandrel in substantially air tight relationship.
