Abstract

1303148 Measuring electrostatic potential XEROX CORP 21 Aug 1970 [29 Aug 1969] 40431/70 Heading G1U [Also in Division G2] An electrode 92, Fig.4, surrounded by insulating material 93 and an earthed screen 91 is periodically exposed, by a solenoid actuated shutter, Fig.3 (not shown) to an electrostatically charged surface forming part of a copying machine, (see Division G2) in order to measure the potential thereof. The output from the electrode 92 is amplified 81, 83, 84, and passed via a contact 85 which is closed for a short period commencing an appropriate period after the electrode is exposed to the charged surface, to store a potential on a capacitor 87 indicative of the potential of the charged surface. A suitable timing circuit, Fig.5 (not shown) is described for delaying the closure of contact 85 following energization of the shutter solenoid by a control pulse produced within the copying machine. The timing circuit also arranges that the potential of the closed shutter, which is earthed, is sensed at appropriate instants, to reduce drift in the first amplifier stage 81.
