Abstract

1302544 HV DC power transmissions ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 23 Sept 1970 [24 June 1969] 31798/69 Heading H2F [Also in Division G3] A control circuit for a controllable rectifier 10 in a D.C. transmission system includes means 24 for controlling the firing angle of the rectifier 10, means 33<SP>1</SP> for generating a first control signal dependent on the difference between the actual direct current I L and a first desired current level I 01 and means 35 for generating a second control signal dependent on the difference betseen I L and a second desired current level (I 01 -dI), first and second amplifiers 32, 34 for feeding the first and second control signals to the firing angle control means 24, amplifier 32 being operable when I L >I 01 (operating along JC, Fig. 4); amplifier 34 being operable when I 01 > I L >(I 01 -dI) i.e. operable along HJ. Fig. 1 shows an HVDC transmission system comprising a rectifying station 10 couplied via a D.C. transmission line 16 to an inverting station 19. The conduction angle of the gridcontrolled rectifiers in station 10 is determined by a pulse generator 24, the timing of which is a function of (a) the desired rectified current 1 01 , (b) the current level required to produce a given output from inverter 19 (=I 01 . dI) and (c) the rectifying valves firing angle, determined by circuit 31. The direct current is monitored by transformer 33 and compared with the required input signal I 01 . The conduction angle of the grid-control rectifiers in the inverting station 19 may be controlled by a constantcurrent control system 45, 43 or by a constantextinction angle control system 49, 48, 44; diodes 41, 42 selecting the control from the amplifier 43, 44 having the most negative output. The extinction angle is neasured at 51 and subtracted from the required extinction angle signal on line 49. Determination of conduction angle.-Circuit 31 may comprise means for deriving a differentiated square wave from the A.C. supply, positive pulses of said wave being used to set a bi-stable circuit (Fig. 2, not shown) which is reset by the next firing pulse from 24. After smoothing, the bi-stable circuit thus gives a D.C. analogue or the firing angle.
