Abstract
1302363 Refrigerating INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 30 Jan 1970 [1 Nov 1968] 51989/68 Heading F4H A cryostat is connected to a refrigerator by two pipes for the supply of liquid helium and the return of vaporized helium, the pipes being in close proximity at the point where they are connected to the cryostat. At least one of the pipes extends within the cryostat so that one pipe communicates with the liquid space and the other with the vapour space. As illustrated, the liquid pipe 4 is merely connected to the lowest point of the cryostat 1, wherein the vapour pipe 6 extends through the cryostat to the vapour space 7 in a neck 2. The cryostat walls, the pipes, and a neck closure 3 may all be of stainless steel, and a gold wire seal may be provided between the closure and the neck. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the pipes are connected to the closure and the liquid pipe is extended to the bottom of the cryostat. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the pipes enter the cryostat midway of its height, the vapour pipe extending to the top of the cryostat and the liquid pipe to the bottom. The cryostat may house a superconducting stator winding of a homopolar dynamo-electric machine.
