Abstract

1302247 Measuring fluid flow E M I Ltd 19 April 1971 [11 March 1970] 11553/70 Heading G1N [Also in Division G4] In order to measure the rate of flow of liquid in a fluid comprising liquid and entrapped gas, pulses from a transducer 3 whose frequency is dependent on the rate of total fluid flow are amplified at 4, squared at 5, differented at 6, and fed to the primary winding 7 of a transformer T whose secondary winding 8 is connected with probes 9, 10, in the liquid. The fluid present provides a resistive load to the winding 8 and this varies according to whether the fluid is liquid or gas, and consequentially the amplitude of the output pulses is also varied accordingly. These pulses are fed to a discriminator which only allows high amplitude pulses (liquid) to pass to a frequency meter 22 and a counter 21 which measures the volume flow. The transducer 3 comprises a pick-up coil sensing perturbations in a magnetic field due rotation of a turbine 2.
