Abstract
1301801 Treating microcapsules NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. 3 May 1971 [14 May 1970] 12641/71 Heading B8C Microcapsules having walls comprising organic polymer material and made by any of the conventional liquid/liquid phase separation techniques, are rendered more hydrophobic by treatment with an organosilicon compound having groups reactive with the polymer material. Treatment may be carried out on the finished microcapsules or may be incorporated into the manufacturing process. The method is particularly useful for treating microcapsules which have been subjected to a treatment with components of a condensation polymer which is formed in the interstices of the capsule walls to render them less permeable. In this case, the treatment may be combined with the step of forming the condensation polymer. Examples of suitable capsule wall material are: gelatin, gelatin/gum arabic, succinylated gelatin, carrageenan, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylic acid, hydrolysed copolymers of methyl vinyl ether or ethylene and maleic anhydride, melamine - formaldehyde resins, starch, zein and polyethylene oxide. Suitable organosilicon compounds are: γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxy silane; N - (trimethoxysilylpropyl)-ethylene diamine and silanes containing epoxy, amino and vinyl groups.
