Retort furnaces.-In a mechanical retort of the kind comprising two superposed chambers separated by a heating-flue f, an additional flue g is provided above the upper chamber communicating at one end with the flue f and at the other with the chimney. The flue is divided by a longitudinal partition, and communicates with the furnace flue b and the top flue g by short vertical passages i, k in the side walls of the structure. The material is fed to the retort through a shoot o, at the lower end of which is a pivoted plate p, so arranged that it is shaken by the scraper blades on the endless conveyer c. The material is discharged by a rotary pocketed drum s.
