Abstract

1301005 Suspension fertilizers; bentonite and attapulgite sols STANDARD OIL CO 16 July 1970 [24 July 1969] 34471/70 Headings C1A and C1B A fertilizer comprises an aqueous suspension which includes at least 30% by weight plant nutrient (e.g. compounds of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and small amounts of compounds of iron, magnesium, manganese, nickel, zinc, &c.) and enough attapulgite or bentonite clay in the form of a sol to substantially inhibit settling out of solids from the suspension, which clay sol comprises from 5 to 30 weight per cent clay, based on total sol weight, and from 1 to 5 weight per cent (based on clay weight) of a condensed phosphate, e.g. lithium, sodium or potassium tripolyphosphates, tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, mixtures of ammonium polyphosphates, tetrasodium or tetralithium pyrophosphate. A method of producing such a fertilizer comprises blending plant nutrient, clay, condensed phosphate and water together to form a suspension. An improvement in such a method involves entraining an inert gas in the suspension to buoy up solids which tend to settle. A suitable gas is air and 3 to 10 volume per cent air may be entrained in the suspension.
