Abstract

1300088 Treatment of fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 April 1970 [8 May 1969] 23465/69 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions D1 and H5] Fibres, particularly of polyethers, polyamides, polyolefins or acrylic polymers, are modified by a process which comprises drawing a fibre through a rotating arc electrical discharge, while restraining it from lateral displacement such that the arc interacts with and sweeps past the fibre once per revolution, the energy of the discharge and the draw speed of the fibre being such that the surface, at least, of the fibre is modified without breakage or destruction. The fibres may be oriented or unoriented and may be conjugate fibres of two synthetic polymers. A suitable rotating arc electrode system comprises a copper rod 10, which forms the positive electrode and is mounted coaxially within copper tube 11 by means of insulator 12, a disc-like member provided with a central orifice, within which electrode 10 is a push-fit, and a C-shaped surrounding orifice 13 (Fig. 1, not shown) for allowing the fibre to be passed through the apparatus. The negative arc electrode comprises a copper washer 15 located on collar 14 inside the tube 11. Annular insulating coil former 16 is a push-fit on tube 11 and supports field coil 17 which comprises about 3000 turns of 28 S.W.G. copper wire. Terminals 18 and 19 connect respectively with the positive and negative leads of coil 17; terminals 20, mounted on rod 10, and 21, mounted on tube 11 are respectively the positive and negative arc electrode connections. The fibre is passed through the annular gap between arc electrodes 10 and 15 and C-shaped orifice 13 at a predetermined speed, the arc is struck between the electrodes and the applied magnetic field adjusted to cause the arc to rotate. In examples oriented or unoriented polyethylene terephthalate, conjugate and monofilament and nylon 66 fibres are modified. The process alters the tensile properties of the fibres and variously imparts and destroys crimping, changes the crystallinity and the degree of orientation and modifies their surface. It may be used to produce a stubbed effect or surface roughening.
