Abstract

1299964 Making cable joints; brazing; tensioning BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd 19 April 1971 [20 Feb 1970] 8299/70 Headings B3A B3E and B3R [Also in Division H2] A metal joint or termination closure (not shown) is brazed, welded or otherwise secured to the cut-back end of a corrugated aluminium &c. cable-sheath S after the minor inside diameter of a part of the sheath at or near the end has been increased so as to provide radial clearance between the sheath and the cable core or cores. The major inside diameter of the sleeve may also be reduced, so as to produce a substantially cylindrical part on the sheath, by pulling out the corrugations with the apparatus shown. Tensioning forces are applied to the sheath by plates 3 and transmitted through moulded metal or plastics clamps 1 which are secured to the sheath by clips 2. The effectiveness of their circumferential clearance as a heat barrier may be increased by evacuating the space and/or introducing tubular, or a container of granular, insulation. Alternatively, cooling fluid may extract the heat of welding, e.g. oil or gas may be circulated on each side of a tube inserted in the space, or an annular tube may be used which has a closed end and is divided by an intermediate wall for use with water as a coolant.
