Abstract

1,095,731. Making radiators; jointing by adhesive. ASSOCIATED ENGINEERING Ltd. April 8, 1965 [Jan. 13, 1964], No. 1453/64. Headings B3A and B3V. [Also in Division F4] A heat exchanger assembly, such as the radiator of a water-cooled engine, is constructed by assembling a core structure 1, end plates 5 and 6, and shells 9 and 10, and other appropriate fittings, using an adhesive, the adhesive then being cured by heating the assembly without the need for supporting jigs. The various fittings are held in position before curing either by mechanical location and interlocking or by the tackiness of the adhesive. The core structure can be bonded using an adhesive either before or during the main curing stage. The end plates 5 and 6 and also the shells 9 and 10 are flanged at their edges and are held in position by flanged end plates 8 and straps 12. An inlet pipe 13, strap 15 and filler cap assembly 14 are attached to the shell 9, while an outlet pipe 16 and drain plug 17 are attached to the shell 10. These fittings may be flanged or unflanged, have bayonet joints or attachment sleeves or be of oval cross-section. They may be held in place initially by spot welding. The shells 9 and 10 may be unflanged at their edges, and may or may not have flanges for attachment of the fittings. The core structure is conveniently of brass and the remainder of the assembly aluminium.
