Abstract

1299536 Treatment of pigments CIBAGEIGY (UK) Ltd 19 April 1971 [20 March 1970] 13677/70 Heading C4P Azo pigments are prepared by a process comprising coupling a diazotized amine and a coupling component, wherein a minor proportion of a fatty alcohol, diol or polyol containing 12 or more carbon atoms is added either to the coupling component before coupling, to the amine before or after diazotization, to the reaction mixture during the coupling or to the pigment resulting from the coupling slurry, the alcohol, diol or polyol being added in an amount from 0À1-30% by weight of the dry pigment being produced or being treated. Suitable alcohols include cetyl, oleyl, behenyl and lauryl alcohol and polyethylene glycol. Surface active agents, matallic salts of acid resins or a free resin may also be added to the reaction mixture. The process is also applicable to preformed azo pigments by forming the pigment into an aqueous slurry and adding the alochol, diol or polyol with agitation and heating and filtering the pigment. The treated pigments are used in the preparation of ink media e.g. lithographic and letter press inks.
