Abstract
1299225 Continuous casting STEEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 20 March 1970 [24 March 1969] 13727/70 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] In order to prevent accretions in the ladle or tundish nozzle used in pouring aluminium killed steels, a non-reactive gas, e.g. argon is supplied between the steel stream and the surface of the nozzle through which it passes. The invention is shown applied to a nozzle in the bottom of a tundish in which said nozzle 11<SP>1</SP> comprises a permeable ring of zirconium silicate defining the orifice 11a with a curved entry 11b and an annular chamber 22 of highly porous brick supplied with gas through bores 20 formed with screw threads 21<SP>1</SP>. The nozzle is surrounded by a casing 19<SP>1</SP> of impermeable porcelain. A modification (Fig. 2) dispenses with the annular chamber, the screw threaded bores supplying the inert gas terminating in the permeable ring of zirconium silicate. The gas is supplied at a flow rate of 1-6 cu. ft. per hr. per sq. inch of orifice surface area and at a pressure of 5-30 lbs. per sq. inch.
