Abstract
1379236 Pouring molten metals ARE SINGER 27 July 1972 [29 April 1971] 12291/71 Heading F4B The erosion of pouring nozzles for molten metals is reduced, and the flow of metal through the nozzles is controlled by producing a film of gas between the surface of the metal and of the nozzle while the metal is being poured. Inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon is fed under pressure to a jacket 1 surrounding a nozzle 2 formed of a porous refractory material secured to a ladle 3. The nozzle 2 may be formed by compacting and sintering powder or granules of magnesium, alumina, silicon nitride or silicon carbide bonded with silica nitride so that the nozzle remains porous. The flow may be controlled by a stopper rod 6, or, in small diameter nozzles, it may be controlled by altering the pressure of the gas supply. The gas supply to different parts of a nozzle may be different, so that the width of a ribbon of molten metal from a slot nozzle may be controlled. Liquids which volatilize or decompose at the temperature of the molten stream may be fed to a water cooled nozzle. Channels formed at the outer surface of the refractory nozzle distribute the liquid, which may be paraffin, water or a halogenated or other hydrocarbon, round the nozzle. The liquid may be supplied to the nozzle from a tank under hydrostatic pressure or may be pumped to the nozzle. Gases or vapours such as air, mixtures of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide or steam may be fed to the nozzle according to the permissible amount of reaction with the metal. The nozzle may have holes or slots to increase the supply of fluid.
