Abstract

1298908 Welding by pressure INTERATOM INTERNATIONALE ATOMREAKTORBAU GmbH 23 June 1971 [24 June 1970] 29535/71 Heading B3R [Also in Division F2] A method of connecting a copper tube to a light-metal tube, e.g. of Al, comprises introducing the end of the light metal tube into the end of the copper tube while at different temperatures so as to shrink the outer, copper tube on to the inner, light metal tube, and heating an annular zone extending over only part of the length of interengagement of the tubes until a eutectic of copper and light metal of limited thickness is formed. Heating of the annular zone is effected by pushing a molybdenum ring over the outer tube to the desired zone, the ring supporting a high frequency induction coil which heats the ring by induction the ring in turn heating the tubes by conduction. Water cooled sleeves may be placed a small distance on either side of the heating ring to limit the length of the zone in which the eutectic is formed.
