Abstract

1298534 Toothed gearing FERD BRASELMANN 19 April 1971 [3 March 1970] 22908/71 Heading F2Q [Also in Division B8] A lifting jack, Fig. 1, comprises a vertical rack 1 with semi-cylindrical grooves 2 at uniform spacing, a carrier element 3, an engagement body 4 rotatable about an axis 5 in the element 3 and a roller 6 rotatable about a shaft 7 in the element 3. The engagement body has three engagement elements 8, 9, 10 each in the form of a segment of a cylinder matching the grooves 2, and arranged at the apices of an equilateral triangle at a spacing equal to the pitch of the grooves 2. The load P is connected to the shaft 7 and produces a reaction Q. These combine to give a line of action C through the axis 5 and the shaft 7. If, as shown, this line C passes above the centre 11 of the lower segment 9 the device is self-locking. The load is raised or lowered by rotation of the body 4 using a lever (not shown), the axis 5 following a series of arcs centred on successive grooves 2. This results in a flapping action as the distance of the axis 5 from the rack 1 varies. There is a minimum of two engagement segments necessary: in general they are arranged at the corners of a regular polygon. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates a quadruplex engagement body (28) pressed into engagement with the rack 1 by an opposed flexible rubber roller (25) also serving to support a loadengaging mandrel (24). Fig. 7 shows an embodiment with an engagement body 38 having two engagement elements in the form of pins 41 and rotatable by a lever 44. The pins 41 are pressed into engagement with the rack 1 by a corrugated spring band, carrier element 3 being guided on the rack 1 and supporting the engagement body 38 in slots 37 and the load-engaging mandrel 24 on a rivet 36.
