Abstract
1298464 Viscosity pumps PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 28 Nov 1969 [29 Nov 1968] 58194/69 Heading F1C [Also in Division F2] A two-stage liquid pump comprises relatively rotatable elements 10, 12, of which 10 may, as shown, be a rotor while 12 may be a stator. Molten glass to be pumped enters the first stage via inlets 20, Figs.1 and 3, and is dragged from each inlet 20 by the moving surfaces 22 of the rotor 10 so as to pass via a restricted clearance 24 to a cavity 26 which merges with an inlet cavity 32, Figs.1 and 5, of the second stage, excess flow passing via a more restricted clearance 28 to the next inlet 20. In the second stage, molten glass is dragged from each inlet cavity 32 via a restricted clearance 34 to an outlet cavity 36. The radial depth of the clearances 24 is large enough to allow bubbles to pass, while the radial depth of the clearances 34 is less to provide a higher pressure and to exclude the bubbles. Bubble-laden molten glass is removed via a passage 40 and a drive coupling 16. Bubble-free molten glass is discharged from the outlet cavities 36 via ducts 42 and a central bore 44. Wedgeshaped bearing chambers 50, 52 are supplied with molten glass from the cavities 26, 36, the molten glass acting as a lubricant and serving to maintain the alignment of the rotor and stator.
