1298259 Packaging apparatus S C ALFORD 9 Nov 1971 [13 Aug 1970 2 June 1971] 39072/70 and 18639/71 Heading B8C Apparatus for packaging meat in sleeve netting or like tubular material 1 comprises a hollow mandrel 2 into which meat 4 is pushed against a spring-loaded piston 8 carrying pins 9 to engage the end 3 of netting 1 which is drawn from a continuous supply over the mandrel via a reduced diameter end 2a. As the meat is pushed into the mandrel, netting is pulled over the meat and finally contracts into a waist 11 of ram 7 to be severed by rotary cutter 12. As ram 7 is withdrawn, spring 10 returns piston 8 to eject the packaged meat. A trough 5 with lid 6 initially receives the meat and defines a feed tube for the mandrel which is mounted on rollers in frame 2c to permit free passage of the netting sleeve 1. In one embodiment, the meat is held between two side arms 36 pivotally attached to ram 7 and having perforations 37 which are engaged by spring-loaded pins extending radially from piston head 8. These arms prevent excessive compression of the meat. The pins are cammed outwardly by the spring-loaded shaft of a netting sleeve clamp member 25 which enters the hollow piston shaft 8a.
