Abstract
1298192 Salts of isatinthiosemicarbazones WELLCOME FOUNDATION Ltd 4 Dec 1969 [6 Sept 1968 1 April 1969] 42562/68 and 17015/69 Heading C2C Alkali metal salts of thiosemicarbazones, which salts in the solid state are said to have the anti-configuration, are prepared by reacting either an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, or an alkali metal alkoxide in a polar non-aqueous solvent, with a compound of formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is H or (up to C 5 ) alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl, each of which may be halogen- or OH- substituted, or R<SP>1</SP> is Ac; R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are H, or one of them is halogen or C 1-5 alkyl or alkoxy, or R<SP>2</SP> is CF 3 , or R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP> is (CH 2 ) 3 when R<SP>3</SP> = R<SP>4</SP>= H; R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are each H or up to C 5 alkyl or alkenyl, or NR<SP>5</SP>R<SP>6</SP> is a heterocyclic group containing no further heteroatom or is morpholino or (possibly N-C 1-5 alkyl-substituted) piperazino. The alkali metal salts may be reacted with solutions of salts of bivalent metals (e.g. Mg, Ca, Mn, Cu or Fe) to give the corresponding thiosemicarbazone/bivalent metal salts or complexes. Antiviral compositions comprise the above alkali metal or bivalent metal salts. Administration may be oral or parenteral; entericcoated capsules, eyedrops, eye-ointments and injections are specified.
