Abstract
1297788 Grading particles UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 17 Aug 1970 [25 Aug 1969] 42231/69 Heading B2H Particles, e.g. of nuclear fuel, are graded according to their sphericity by feeding the particles to the upper surface of a horizontal rotatable table on which the particles are accelerated both radially and circumferentially so that the majority of the surface of each particle comes into contact with the upper surface of the table before it is ejected at the periphery of the table whereby, due to the drag between the particles and the surface of the table, particles of relatively poor sphericity are carried further around the table than particles of relatively good sphericity so that particles of varying grades of sphericity can be collected at spaced points around the edge of the table. As shown, nuclear fuel particles are fed one after the other on to a rotatable table 1 from a hopper 7 via a hopper 2 and a feed chute 3, the hopper 2 being vibrated by a vibrator 4. The particles depending on their degree of sphericity move on the table along paths C 1 -C 6 and fall into appropriate section 17 of a collecting tray 16 and from there into an associated collection vessel 20. Particles of very poor shape follow paths such as C 7 , C 8 . An adjustable short deflector baffle 9 prevents such particles from accumlating near the centre of the table and deflects them towards an adjustable removal baffle 10 which diverts them to the edge of the table. The table I may be of metal or plastics and in the latter case its upper surface is rendered electrically conducting by the application of a metallic or colloidal graphite film to avoid the build up of static charges. The baffles 9, 10 are fabricated from polyethylene sheet.
