Abstract

1297658 Magnetic brakes; track brakes KNORR-BREMSE GmbH 4 Dec 1970 [4 Dec 1969]. 57829/70 Heading F2E [Also in Division H2] A magnetic brake for a rail vehicle includes a coil for exciting first and second magnet structures 4 which structures 4 act with the rail to produce a braking effect by friction or by eddy current action and are arranged one after the other in a direction along the rail when the brake is mounted on the vehicle, the two structures 4 having respective portions 6, 7 which engage with one another to prevent tilting of the structures 4 during braking. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the two structures 4 (these being merely representative of a number of identical structures arranged in line) are of U- shape in cross-section and have limbs 5 which engage over an oval coil box 1; the structures 4 are separated by one of a number of partitions 3 arranged in an opening 2 of the coil box 1. Each limb 5 of the magnet structures 4 has a bearing surface 6 which bears on an end portion 7 of the adjacent magnet structure 4. This arrangement prevents the structures 4 from tilting during braking but allows the end faces 8 of the structures 4 to bear fully on a rail surface 9 to effect braking. In Fig. 2 is illustrated a U-shaped magnet structure 10 comprising limbs 11 and 12 juxtaposed to individual limbs 13, 14 of further magnet structures. Triangular pole shoes 15, 16, 15<SP>1</SP>, 16<SP>1</SP> are welded to the limbs 11, 12, 13, 14 and elongate members 17, 18, 17<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>1</SP> made of non-magnetic material are welded to an edge of the pole shoes. Each limb 11, 12, 13, 14 is provided with a bearing surface 19 for a projecting end portion of an elongate member 17 or 18 at a pole shoe on the other limb of the magnet structure. The bearing surfaces 19 of the magnet structure 10 respectively co-operate with bearing portions of adjacent pole shoes 151, 16<SP>1</SP>. The bearing surfaces 19 are reduced in size by bevelled surfaces 20, 21. The pole shoes are shown as triangular but they could alternatively be rectangular with the elongate non-magnetic members angled to enable them to be welded along two rectangle edges of the pole shoe. The embodiment of Fig. 2 utilizes eddy current effects for braking as does the embodiment of Fig. 3. In Fig. 3 the two limbs 26, 27 of a U-shaped magnet structure 25 are screwed to one another in the web portion and these limbs 26, 27 are inserted in the oval opening of a coil box. The end portions of the limbs have welded thereto by weld seams, e.g. 35, pole shoes 28, 29 to which are welded by weld seams 37, 38 elongate members 33 made of a non-magnetic material with frictional surfaces. The pole shoes 28, 29 project laterally beyond the limbs 26, 27 and bearing portions of the pole shoes lie on narrowed portions 30 of the end faces of respective neighbouring limbs of the same polarity and act to prevent tilting of the structures. Flat support elements 34 which provide additional bearing surface area adjoining the narrowed portions 30 are welded laterally on to limbs 26, 27.
