1297290 Lawn mowers E G SCHULZE 25 Nov 1970 56089/70 Heading A1F A rotary lawn-mower comprises a platform 16 from which a cylindrical skirt portion 20 depends, to the flange of which a guard-plate 26 is fixed to leave a crescent-shaped opening 32 at the front. The substantially V-shaped forward edge of the guard-plate 26 defines an angle of about 160‹ and the opposite ends of this V-shaped edge terminate at points about 160‹ apart circumferentially on the skirt 20. Directly above the crescent-shaped opening is an upwardly spiralling channel portion 36 supporting a frame 44 acting as an outlet, for attachment to a catcher, at its larger, open end. A blade device 46 rotates in the compartment 34 bounded by the platform 16, skirt 20 and guard-plate 26, and is made up of a metal bar 50 having twisted ends, constituting blades 52. The blades 52 create an updraught which brings grass upright into the opening 32 and which enables cut grass and other matter to pass along the channel portion 36, which is made of fracture-resistant material for protection against stones. The size of the opening 32 brings about increased suction, and over the compartment 34 there is only turbulence, with no build-up of back pressure. The blade device 46 is mounted for rotation on a shaft 54 of a known type of motor or prime-mover 58 carried by the mower-frame 12, and the end 54' acts as a stop to prevent the guard plate 20 being forced up into the blade device 46. In another embodiment, the channel portion 36 is made detachable from the platform 16.
