Abstract
1297249 Solution polymerization of watersoluble monomers CALGON CORP 19 Nov 1970 [24 Nov 1969] 55035/70 Heading C3P A method of solution polymerizing one or more water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomers comprises preparing an aqueous solution containing 10-70% by weight of monomer, adjusting the temperature of the solution to from 0-80‹ C. and adding from 1 x 10<SP>-6</SP> to 5 x 10<SP>-2</SP> moles of tertiary butyl peroxypivalate per mole of monomer, and allowing polymerization to proceed, there being added to the monomer solution at some stage before addition of the peroxypivalate 1-500 p.p.m. (based on the weight of the solution) of a chelating agent, and dissolved oxygen being removed before, during or after said temperature adjustment by purging the solution with an inert gas and thereafter maintaining the monomer solution substantially oxygen-free. Polymerization may proceed uncontrolled, isothermally or adiabatically. An accelerator may also be used with the peroxypivalate; useful accelerators include N, N-dimethylaniline, ferric/ous ions plus sodium salicylate, cuprous ions, and N,N-dimethyltoluidine (p- or m-isomer). Suitable monomers include (meth)acrylamide and N-substituted derivatives thereof, acrylic aminimides, (meth) acrylic acid and water-soluble esters thereof, vinylsulphonates, vinylphosphonates, vinylbenzylsulphates, carbovinyloxymethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, vinylpyridine and diallyl dialkyl quaternary ammonium compounds; a cross-linking monomer such as methylene-bisacrylamide may also be used. Chelating agents disclosed are di- and tetrasodium salts of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, cupferron and nitrilotrisacetamide.
