1297121 Jointing by stamping; shearing; welding NOVOPRESS GmbH PRESSEN UND PRESSWERKZEUGE & CO KG 20 Nov 1969 [20 Nov 1968 11 Aug 1969] 56922/69 Headings B3Q, B3R and B3W Apparatus for crimping and cold-welding cable connectors, sleeves &c. to conductors, ropes or rods comprises two die-surfaces disposed at an angle to each other and a die adapted to be driven towards the die-surfaces by means operable to vary the length of the crimping stroke depending on the size of the workpiece and to stop the driven die. In one form, Fig. 1, there is a fixed die 6 and a die 11 movable along an inclined guide by a die 5 which is also carried laterally by the die 6. The press is stopped by contact between the crimped connector and a pivoted member 13 which operates a draw-rod 14 for opening a valve 16 against the force of a spring 15. Thus hydraulic fluid from a pump 18 to a cylinder 1 for operating the die 5 escapes to a reservoir. In another construction, Fig. 2, the pivoted member 13 carries an adjustable abutment 21 for operating an electric limit switch 30. A slide 29, 24, 25 carrying the member 14 is biased by spring 27 towards the sleeve 44 so that the switch is opened in the absence of a sleeve. Alternatively, the limit switch (10), Fig. 3 (not shown), of an electrically driven apparatus may be operated direct by contact with the connector, the driven die (5) being wider than the stationary dies (6). In another construction, Fig. 4, die 5 is mounted on a handle 1 to which is pivoted a lever 3 carrying the die 5. Also mounted on the pivot 30 is a strap 84 which is pivoted at 95 to a handle 89. A pin 90 on the handle is received in a slot 96 in the lever 3 and the members are held straight by a spring 91. As the resistance to movement of die 5 increases, the handle 89 turns about the pin 90, releasing a pawl 92 for engaging teeth 86 so as to lock the strap 84 to the handle 1. The handle 89 now turns about the pivot 95, rotating the lever 3 about pivot 80 as pin 90 slides in the slot 96. An hydraulic cylinder may be fitted for increasing pressure. Shearing; punching; gripping.-These operations may be performed by additional tools, e.g. the shearing tools 81, 83, Fig. 4.
